Tips and Resources on Personal Finance for Indian Women

I am back, as promised, with some stuff on personal finance for women!! In my previous post, we looked at how women were being impacted by the current demonetization drive and how little control the average Indian woman had over her finances. But we’re not going to just sit there and let this continue, are we? We’re going to get educated!

If you’re already a personal finance whiz, then congratulations!! I sure am jealous of you!! However the fact is, most Indian women, even urban, educated ones, are clueless about managing their finances and many women don’t have the freedom to do so. Here are some numbers that prove this important point.

Less than 50% of working Indian women make their own financial decisions
80% of Indian women don’t have their own bank account
The financial literacy of Indian women is a measly 4%
By and large, women outlive men, due to which women constitute 87% of impoverished senior citizens

Okay, that’s enough depressing information for today! Now let’s move on to the good stuff – lots of resources in the form of articles, videos and books to help you learn and manage your finances better. Let’s go!

Videos on Personal Finance

1. The Money Talks with Hansi video series on YouTube is an absolute must watch for anyone who’s serious about personal finance. Hansi and Mr. Sikka tackle a different finance topic in each video and you have to admit – they make a hilarious pair! Check out this video about how smart women manage their money.

2. Manisha Thakor is a personal finance expert who is pretty popular around the globe. Her video on Women & Money drives home some important points on why financial literacy is so important for women.

3. DSP Black Rock is a mutual fund company, but the website also has a bunch of information to help you understand investing. Their videos are simple to understand and are perfect for newbies to investing.

4. Monika Halan is the editor of Mint Money and she addresses all kinds of financial queries on the Smart Money show on Bloomberg TV. Monika is friendly and speaks in a simple manner. Getting to see how different people manage their money based on their particular financial goals can be quite interesting!

1. This article from Women’s Web focuses on personal finance for single Indian women – women who absolutely need to handle their finances on their own.

2. Jago Investor is probably the most popular personal finance website in India right now, and for good reason! The site contains a wealth of information on pretty much every financial topic. However, it may seem a little overwhelming for an absolute newbie.

3. The Big Decisions website has all kinds of articles about various aspects of personal finance, from simple ones like how a joint account can be risky to more large scale ones like how demonetization affects real estate.

4. Money View is a financial app, but their blog has quite a bit of useful information on all matters pertaining to personal finance. Their articles are quite applicable to the average Indian who’d like money tips when getting married, going on a holiday or planning for retirement.

5. The Balance is not a site specifically for the Indian market, but it has a lot of simple, informational articles that apply to general personal finance for everyone. Check out their top ten tips on money management for women for lots of links to related topics.

6. Tired of financial jargon? Simplify matters with this dictionary of sorts, aptly titled “The Glossary of Incomprehensible Banking Jargon”. So if you’ve always wondered what Risk Management or Financial Restructuring mean, this is where you should go!

1. Personal Finance for Women in India

This is probably the first book to have such a specific target audience – Indian women who want to take charge of their finances! Written by Ankush Thakur and Priya Florence Shah, the book covers all basic financial topics like saving and investing and how to go about it.

2. Money Smart: The Indian Woman’s Guide to Managing Wealth

This book is written with me in mind – yes, someone who’s scared of financial jargon but still wants to know what it means! Reenita Malhotra Hora & Divya Vij have written a book that tackles everything – opening an account, buying a home, investing and saving taxes. Perfect!

3. How to Be your Own Financial Planner in Ten Steps

If you want to take control of your finances, you need to be your own financial planner! This book by Manish Chauhan focuses on most people’s main financial goals like insurance and debt repayment and outlines some important tips for each.

4. A Family’s Guide to the Seven Steps to Financial Freedom

Remember Monika Halan who we mentioned earlier? This is her book and is a simple guide for anyone who’d like to secure their family’s finances. Besides tips and helpful hints, the book also has worksheets to list your goals and create a plan for them.

5. I Can Do Financial Planning

This book is part of the RBI’s campaign to improve financial literacy among the general public. Swapna Mirashi has written it with finance newbies in mind, people who are staring at the finance world at a distance, wondering how to dive in!

6. Lucky Bitch: A Guide for Exceptional Women to Create Outrageous Success

Lucky Bitch by Denise Duffield isn’t exactly a book on personal finance. It’s more about how women can create a healthy relationship with money, and actually get what they want and deserve. Many women have ‘money blocks’, possibly due to familial and societal constraints on women dealing with money. This book helps to get rid of those blocks and open yourself up for abundance.

Now you have quite a bit of information on your hands, don’t you? But remember, all the information in the world can’t help if you don’t take action! Follow these tips to get started on your journey of 100% financial independence.

5 Tips for Financial Planning for Women

1. Track your spending – Jot down where every rupee is going, even if it’s just for an autorikshaw ride! So when you look at it at the end of the month, you’ll have the answer to ‘Where’s all my money going?’.

2. Set financial goals – Sit and think about what you want in life, for yourself and your family. For most people financial goals include an emergency fund, a home, health and life insurance, children’s education and retirement.

3. Budget, budget, budget! Decide on fixed percentages of your income to be spent on utilities,

extras, savings, debt repayment and charity. Fix an amount for each category and stick to it!

4. Invest smartly – This is where most women start hemming and hawing. Women are good savers but not good investors. Building your wealth is very important – not just to land up on the Forbes list, but to beat inflation and maintain your standard of living.

5. Grow your income – If you have a job, learn new skills so you can work your way up. If you’re an entrepreneur, think of new ways to expand your business. If you’re a homemaker, think of how you can generate an income in your spare time.

For proper financial management, you’ll need to regularly review everything – your goals, your budgets and your investments. Many banks have special schemes for women when it comes to insurance and loans, so make the most of them.

Take the time to educate yourself – maybe spend 15 minutes a day reading an article or watching a video. Educating yourself not just improves your financial prospects, it helps others too. You’ll be in a better position to educate your house help, for example, and she’ll be able to pass on this information to the women around her. So go ahead and take control of your money – you’ll be glad you did!!

Money in the Rice Jar

There’s this quote by Will Smith that goes “Money and success don’t change people; they merely amplify what’s already there.” I think this quote has gained new meaning during the demonetization drive that’s currently going on. At the stroke of midnight of November 8, 2016, our carriages turned to pumpkins and our horses turned to mice, leaving hordes of people running to ATMs, never mind a glass slipper or two being left behind in the rush!

Okay, so you’ve already read all about the serpentine queues and lack of cash in the ATMs. There’s enough trash talking going on everywhere too, with people either being vehemently against or passionately for the entire drive. Seems like there’s no middle ground these days, especially on social media! Anyway, amidst all the noise, it’s been quite interesting to look at how this has affected women, especially the ones who aren’t that educated.

My journeys to the money machines these past few weeks have revealed a few things about Indian women and money. Many of them are unable to fill out a basic deposit slip at a bank. It’s not that they’re illiterate (hello, 100% literate state?). It’s just that the entire process seems too complicated and they’re basically just scared. Women were asking me if I could accompany them to the ATM and help them withdraw cash. And this is in Kerala, a state where 91.98% women are literate, compared to the national average of 65.46%. I can only imagine the troubles borne by women who aren’t literate.

However, turns out that the general understanding of literacy does not mean financial literacy. For most Indian women, saving bits of money here and there and putting them in rice and flour jars has been a common practice in the old days. You would think that most women have operational bank accounts in their name these days, but facts show otherwise. According to a UNDP report, 80% of women in India don’t have a bank account.

I have to admit, sitting in my apartment with a computer and an internet connection, I didn’t imagine that the number of unbanked women would be so high. I guess the patriarchal notion of financial planning being a man’s job still persists. There have been some sexist jokes going about since the demonetization started, like the one where husbands say that they’ll at least get to know how much money their wives have been ‘stealing’ from them. Seriously? Your wife works the whole day, all week and she budgets and saves money, and you call that stealing? Why don’t you just help her open a bank account? Why, are you scared she’ll become independent and won’t be as easy to control? Ugh!!

Before people start attacking me – I’m no financial expert myself! Any talk about equities, derivatives and endowments are enough to send me running. I know many other urban women are in the same boat, and the jargon makes the field of personal finance look intimidating. Yet, providing proper financial literacy for Indian women is something that has been way overdue, and I wish the centre and state governments focused more on this. Gender inequalities like these seriously hamper the development of the nation as a whole, as several studies have pointed out.

For all the women out there like me, I’m compiling some resources that’ll help us understand personal finance better and take more control of our money, whether it’s property, gold or other assets, like bonds or stocks (look at me, going all finance-y). Get Smart, Girls. Get Suraksha

is a great country. Mahaan. We invented Chess. We started the number system. We gave the world Bollywood.

We have 893 girls born for every 1,000 boys. We have crimes against women building up at the rate of 129% every year and a conviction rate less than half of it. Bharat Mata ki Jai.

I’d like to relate an incident that occurred during the days I was working in an IT company in Bangalore. After a weekend at home, I used to return early Monday mornings by bus. These buses from Kerala usually reached at dawn, around 5:30 or 6:00. Depending on the season, there might or might not be daylight then.

One bright Monday morning, I got off at Madiwala and was looking for an auto to take me to my hostel. An auto guy came along and made the usual demands for a 1 and ½ fare. I agreed and got in. Soon, the driver turned chatty. He asked me if I knew Kannada. I said no. He went on anyway, talking endlessly and asking questions. I began to tense up, with every cell of my body telling me that this guy was definitely not normal. I began looking out of the auto, but there weren’t that many people about. I considered jumping out, but it seemed risky. I was literally at my wits end.

Eventually, the driver reached my hostel, though he parked a little away. I jumped out, sweating, and handed him the fare. But instead of receiving it, he got ready to come out and take off his clothes!! He was saying something, but all I remember was dropping the money on the road and running with my bags towards my hostel. I think I could hear him shouting, ‘Madam, madam’ from behind. I couldn’t sleep for nearly a week after that. To this day, I haven’t told my parents about this. When I think about it now, I wish I had Smart Suraksha with me.

Here are a few scenarios where you can use this app:

1. Like the one above. You’re in a vehicle and like me, don’t want to risk enraging the driver by screaming, especially if you’re not sure there is anyone to hear those screams.

2. You’re waiting at a bus stop or similar place and you sense imminent danger or are all alone.

3. You’re working late and there’s hardly anyone left in office.

4. Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and it’s late. It’s even risky accepting help at this stage.

I believe that women have a certain intuitive power that signals us when danger is near. Considering we live in such a technological age, why don’t we combine both these strengths and ensure our safety? Get the Smart Suraksha app installed in your phone right away and empower yourselves. How Intimate should ‘Intimate’ be?

Awareness – ‘having knowledge of’. True, you need to know enough about something before you start to do something about it.

But consider this – You are not in the least bit aware of the strange things that are happening to your body right now. You are scared, and you’re not sure how to seek comfort. You are even embarrassed, since ‘good girls’ don’t talk about what happens ‘down there’. You’re a woman; shut up and deal with it.

And there ends the first step towards change. Change towards a healthy, confident and self respecting life.

Is this what protecting the privacy of women’s intimate health is supposed to do? Submerge them under the dark sea of ‘embarrassment’? Of course, I don’t think it is necessary to announce your period from the rooftops but I do consider it vital to have an open discussion of these things, especially when the health of half the population is at stake. In my opinion, women’s intimate health issues need to be given priority at the governing levels and at all institutions, and we desperately need to get rid of myths of the kind that regard menstruation as dirty or impure.

Women’s intimate health could cover a variety of topics: from the onset of puberty to birth control and reproductive health all the way to menopause. At every step of the way, a woman is haunted by lack of knowledge, support and the tools required to take control of her own body.

A number of studies, conducted by UNICEF, WHO and the Indian government have shown the lack of toilets to be the main reason for girls dropping out of school. Those who do stay back cut classes for about a week every month, leading to lower academic performance.

Obviously, there are people who think talking about girls’ having periods in public is way too blasphemous, so then talking about building them functioning toilets? Shush, shush.

These people need to be informed that periods aren’t exactly a curse sent from above. It is a normal part of a woman’s reproductive life and something that just needs extra care.

Now, girls tend to run to their mothers/other females for advice or support regarding intimate issues. This doesn’t necessarily have to be seen as regressive and there are a number of reasons this works:

a. Children are generally closer to their Moms

b. This is 100% a female experience

c. Talking to other men about personal matters might open up doors to potentially dangerous situations

See the figures for females? Nearly half of that of males. From the looks of it, this intimacy thing isn’t helping our daughters.

Then we have the whole saga of birth control and antenatal/postnatal care. This, at least, gets a lot of press and there is much more awareness now and it is not as much a taboo topic today as in the past. One reason could be because two lives are involved – the mother’s and the child’s. Somehow in our country, people seem more comfortable discussing birth and pregnancy than menstrual or vaginal care. Maybe this has something to do with how Indians think of the ‘Mother’ as a goddess and the ‘Woman’ as dirt. Double standards, anyone??

Of all issues, I think menopause is the one that gets the least attention, partly because the women involved, the 40-50 age group, are the most reluctant to discuss their intimate matters. Menopausal women go through a lot of uncomfortable changes and they need all the support and care they can get from their husbands, children and others. But how will the family even know that the woman in their life is suffering if she herself is too embarrassed to talk about it?

So I iterate: while I do not think the whole extended family needs to sit at the table brainstorming ways to ease their teenager’s painful periods, she needs to know what is normal and what is not, and whom to turn to in the latter case. She needs to know that her body is a most wonderful thing and everything it does has a rhyme and reason and nothing about it needs to evoke shame or embarrassment.

What They Should be Teaching in Schools Today

I’ve been thinking about this topic for quite some time now, long before starting this blog. So today being the eve of Independence Day and all, I thought I might actually put those thoughts into words and thus this post was born!

Everyone agrees that the kind of education we get in most Indian schools today is of hardly any use once we are out in the big bad world. So I have put together a list of subjects that I personally think all kids should be taught, regardless of gender, caste/religion, socio-economic conditions, school syllabus, medium of instruction etc. Ok, I am certainly no expert on this, so these points are purely based on my experience :-)

Health and Nutrition

This should go beyond the ‘We should eat fruits and vegetables to stay healthy’. How many servings of each food should we eat a day, how can you determine how much a serving is, what are the benefits of each food group, what are the cons of consuming an excess of any food group. Also, portion control, the importance of eating at the right time every day, and preferably sample menus. Every kid should grow up informed and able to make healthy food choices.

Basic Cooking Skills

It would be great if everyone could prepare a basic meal of rice, lentils and vegetables by themselves. For one, it would do away with the gender stereotype of women slaving away in the kitchen while men watch the news waiting for dinner. Then it would ensure that no one would have to depend on any one else for a healthy meal – you can cook it yourself!! It would also introduce kids with talent to a whole new world of opportunities.

Yoga

I have yet to meet someone for whom yoga hasn’t been of any help (after consistent practice). It is a workout for which you require no equipment/shoes etc. It ensures health and mobility in old age and anyone, at any age, in any place can do it. It’s best for kids to get trained as early as possible.

Self Defense

This is especially important for girls, for obvious reasons. Domestic violence is an ugly reality in many households in India, and a girl who can kick some a** will stand a better chance of good treatment in her marital home compared to a doormat.

Basic Laws of the Land

These would include the very basic laws regarding women’s empowerment, crime against women, consumer rights, the RTI act etc. Here it would also be necessary to learn basic traffic rules and also the consequences of breaking seemingly trivial laws – urinating in public, spitting on the road etc. Kids need to learn that there really are laws for such things and fines to pay for breaking them.

Basic Banking Operations

There are so many educated adults I know who seem kind of lost when they enter a bank. Every boy and girl needs to be acquainted with basic banking terms and what they can do in a bank. Financial independence, specially for women, is a necessity and everyone should be able to handle their finances intelligently by themselves.

Use of basic tools

This is also true of a lot of ‘educated’ people. Many women leave the ‘light-bulb’ changing task to their men, and then crib about it when they take too long. So the use of basic hardware should help everyone take care of minor repairs themselves, instead of forever waiting for the plumber/electrician/carpenter to show up for every tiny thing that goes wrong.

Sex education

This is a no brainer. I don’t care who thinks sex information is taboo, it needs to be communicated to all children in the right dose by the right experts and NOT the Internet. This should obviously include how to differentiate ‘right touch’ and ‘wrong touch’ and what to do in case of the latter situation. Prevention is always better than cure.

Fundamentals of most common Indian religions

Religion is this huge, explosive topic in India, at the root of which lies a lot of ignorance. Teaching all kids (caste/religion no bar) about the fundamentals of the most common Indian religions will help in some level to gain an understanding about what their brothers and sisters of other religions believe in. This should help in increasing tolerance and peace –

after all, isn’t that what all religions ultimately preach?

Environment Friendliness

The Earth is not going to solve its pollution problems by itself, we have to do it. And everyone needs to realize the gravity of the current situation and start acting upon it. There are a lot of simple things that even kids can do – avoid littering to begin with, recycling, avoid plastic bags/bottles, saving water, harvesting rainwater etc. Awareness from a very young age onwards is bound to ingrain these acts naturally in them.

Basic courtesy and manners

Ok, this might seem superficial and unimportant, but the fact is that a lot of people consider Indians an uncouth and rude people. We might argue that we don’t want to judge ourselves by the Western standards of culture and refinement, but the truth is we definitely have room for improvement here. Kids should learn to be considerate of their fellow passengers, to stop yelling, jumping queues, pushing others to get through and in general making everything seem like someone else’s fault. Agreed, the sheer size of the Indian population makes it difficult, but isn’t a billion smiles better than a billion frowns?

So the Delhi Besharmi Morcha has ended. It was India’s version of the global reply to the taunt of a police officer in Toronto who said that women should stop dressing like sluts if they didn’t want to be eve teased.

Well, well, one MCP dares say that in Toronto and all women are up in arms. Here, we have everyone from authorities to strangers to elders in the family telling us the same thing; only they leave out the word ‘slut’. Probably why the Indian morcha left it out too.

We have guys cat calling and wolf whistling and worse day after day at us fully dressed women, and what do we do? We bow our heads in shame and just walk by in silence. Why? Because hum besharam nahin hain. We are not shameless. We are ashamed of ourselves. How could we have attracted those guys? Maybe we should change our route to college/work/school tomorrow. Maybe I should wear a longer kurta with my jeans. Maybe I should lower my eyes so that I cannot see beyond the tips of my toes.

Yes, we have to make all the changes. The guys can still sit on the wall and continue. No one’s going to push them off. The police? Oh give me a break. They have lots more serious cases to work on (read: distort facts/’lose’ evidence/harass witnesses).

During my college days, the inmates of the girls’ hostel had a curfew time of 6:00 p.m. and the guys…..well, they didn’t have a curfew. That obviously wasn’t enough for them. So, they got onto their terrace and started whistling and yelling out to the girls who were having a walk in the hostel gardens. So, authorities made our compound wall higher. Then we started hanging out on our terrace to enjoy the fresh air and watch the birds flying freely. But then it was closer to the guys’ terrace, a fact which was taken full advantage of by them. That resulted in a ban from frequenting the terrace for us. Always us. Never them.

We did protest, of course. We weren’t going to let it go without a fight. But everything fell on deaf ears. “It’s for your own protection” was the answer all the time. But what we actually wanted was justice. They were the perpetrators, why weren’t they taken to task? Even today, the injustice of that makes my blood boil.

Just shows how long a way the Indian public (man) has to go. I really doubt how much a walk like this will help to that end, but maybe someone somewhere in a position of power will sit up and take notice. If there is someone like that out there (who also reads my blog :-)), here are a few suggestions from me:

Educate all children – girls and boys – right from a young age that you CANNOT pass lewd comments at passing girls/women. They should be told that eve teasing now comes under ‘Crime against Women’.

IPC Section 298 (A) and (B) sentences an eve teaser for a maximum of 3 months.
IPC Section 292 sentences someone who shows obscene material to women to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2000.
IPC Section 509 sentences obscene body language to imprisonment of one year and/or a fine.

Learning a law in its entirety makes it more real to common people.

Have plain clothes policemen around all school/college areas to pounce upon local ‘roadside romeos’ (hate that term).

Ensure a government initiated supply of pepper spray to all girls over the age of 16 and educate them to use it on guys who harass them in any way.

This is the most important: Change the attitude of the police. They have to give sexual harassment a very high priority, because the delay will only complicate matters and let the harasser walk away free. Also, a little more sensitivity on the part of the police in such matters would be helpful.

Not Fair. Not at all.

I’ll jump straight to the question – do fairness cream ads bother you? You know the ones where the girl is dark and depressed due to a variety of reasons – she’s unemployed, or she’s being rejected by prospective grooms or she’s just having body image issues. And then, suddenly a well-meaning friend goes up to her and says, “Why don’t you try xyz fairness cream?”

Yeah, why don’t you? Why don’t you just go ahead and join the thousands out there to show your support to the burgeoning fairness cream industry? After all, let’s face it, you are kind of a loser with that complexion. Just apply a little of that magic cream, and voila!! You’ll be transformed!! Just like that!! You’ll immediately get a new wardrobe in multiple shades of pink, your hair will be perfect, you’ll have company head hunters and cool single guys all running after you and you’ll end up on a billboard/magazine cover. So what’s not to like??

Plenty. I can’t get the logic that only fair complexioned people can get jobs and get married. I mean does fairness automatically give you some kind of compatibility factor? Or does it indicate some skill left unsaid on your resume? Seriously, what is it?

There’s this nauseating ad about a girl who has a crush on a guy who doesn’t give a paisa about her. Then she goes and puts on some cream which gives her a new style and great hair and all that, and now that MCP comes fawning over her. And she is flattered that her complexion got her noticed!!

There’s this even more infuriating ad which prompted me to write this post in the first place. This girl (who could already give Snow White a complex) is thinking about a guy and she actually says, “Maybe he’ll notice me if I get rid of my dark complexion”. And you really want such a shallow dude? Aaaargghhhh!!!!!!

Everyone knows what the standard Indian matrimonial ad says. Maybe now they’ll also mention – “Bride should be at least a level 2 on the fairness meter, as seen on fairness cream packs”. Then it’ll be easy to grade all prospective brides based on this wonderful meter. Ugh!

God, this is disgusting. But the fact is that all the major cosmetic brands are coming up with their own versions of fairness creams, the nomenclature varying – whitening, pure white, natural white, light, white perfect – white, white, white!! That’s when I wonder if no one else is getting offended and annoyed by these ads. It’s a simple matter of genetics. Your skin color is inherited just like the color of your hair and your eyes. Sigh!
